케임브릿지 사전은 'insurrection'을 "an organized attempt by a group of people to defeat their government and take control of their country, usually by violence(한 그룹의 국민들에 의한, 대개 폭력을 통해, 정부를 타도하고 그들의 국가에 관한 통제력을 얻으려고 하는 조직된 시도)"라고 정의했다.

"armed insurrection(무장 반란)"

콜린스 사전은 'insurrection'을 이렇게 설명했다. "An insurrection is violent action that is taken by a large group of people against the rulers of their country, usually in order to remove them from office(insurrection은 큰 그룹의 국민들이 그들 국가의 지배자들에 맞서, 그들을 관직에서 쫓아내기 위해 취하는 폭력적인 행동이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"They were plotting to stage an armed insurrection(그들은 무장 반란을 모의하는 중이었다)."

"Those found guilty of rebellion and insurrection will be sentenced to life imprisonment(모반과 반란 혐의로 유죄를 받은 이들은 종신형을 받을 것이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'insurrection'을 "a situation in which a large group of people try to take political control of their own country with violence(큰 그룹의 국민들이 자신들의 국가에 관한 정치적 통제력을 폭력으로 취하려는 상황)"라고 풀이했다.

"He led an armed insurrection against the regime(그는 현 정권에 대항해 무장 반란을 이끌었다)."
