케임브릿지 사전은 'yoke'를 "something that connects two things or people, usually in a way that unfairly limits freedom(두 사물 또는 사람을, 대체로 불공평하게 자유를 제한하는 식으로 연결하는 것)"이라고 정의했다.

"the yoke of marriage(결혼의 멍에)"

"Both countries had thrown off the communist yoke(두 국가 모두 공산주의의 멍에를 벗어던졌다)."

콜린스 사전은 'yoke'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that people are under the yoke of a bad thing or person, you mean they are forced to live in a difficult or unhappy state because of that thing or person(사람들이 어떤 나쁜 사물이나 사람의 yoke 아래에 있다고 말한다면, 그들이 바로 그 사물 또는 사람 때문에 강제로 어렵거나 불행한 상태에서 살아야 한다는 뜻이다)." 문학적(literary)인 표현이다.
