케임브릿지 사전은 'profanity'를 "an offensive or obscene word or phrase(모욕적인 또는 음란한 단어 또는 구)"라고 정의했다.

"It was the song's opening line, a series of profanities, that caused the record to be banned on the radio station(그 노래를 라디오 스테이션에서 금지되게 만든 것은 일련의 비속어로 된, 오프닝 가사였다)."

콜린스 사전은 'profanity'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Profanities are swear words(profanities는 욕하는 말들이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"We have grown accustomed to having our ears assailed by mindless cursing and profanities(우리는 아무 생각 없이 하는 악담과 욕으로 귀를 공격당하는 데 익숙해졌다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'profanity'를 "swear words, or religious words used in a way that shows a lack of respect for God or holy things(욕, 또는 신이나 신성한 것들에 대한 존경심이 부족함을 보여 주는 식으로 쓰이는 종교적인 말)"라고 풀이했다.

"He uttered a stream of profanities(그는 일련의 비속어를 내뱉었다)."
