케임브릿지 사전은 'pervade'를 이렇게 정의했다. "When qualities, characteristics, or smells pervade a place or thing, they spread through it and are present in every part of it(자질, 특징, 또는 냄새가 장소 또는 사물을 pervade 한다면, 그들이 그것을 통해 퍼지고 그것이 모든 부분에 존재하는 것이다)."

"The film movie is a reflection of the violence that pervades our culture(그 영화는 우리 문화에 만연한 폭력을 반영해 보여 준다)."

콜린스 사전은 'pervade'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something pervades a place or thing, it is a noticeable feature throughout it(어떤 것이 장소나 사물을 peravade 한다면, 그것이 그 후자 전부에서 뚜렷한 특징이라는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'pervade'를 "to spread through and be easy to notice in every part of something(어떤 것의 모든 부분에서 쉽게 발견할 수 있을 정도로 퍼져 있다)"이라고 풀이했다.
