케임브릿지 사전은 'downtrodden'을 "treated badly and unfairly(형편없이, 불공평한 대접을 받은)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'downtrodden'을 이렇게 설명했다. "People who are downtrodden are treated very badly by people with power, and do not have the ability or the energy to do anything about it(downtrodden한 사람들은 권력을 가진 사람들에게 형편없는 대우를 받았으며, 그에 대해 어떤 일도 할 능력이나 에너지가 없는 사람들이다)."
