케임브릿지 사전은 'turf'를 "the area that a person or group considers its own(어떤 사람 또는 그룹이 자신의 지역이라고 여기는 곳)"이라고 정의했다.

"Judges feel that the courtroom is their private turf(판사들은 법정을 자신의 사적 구역이라고 생각한다)."

"The fight over high-definition TV standards has been a turf war among the electronics, motion picture, and recording industries(고화질 TV의 기준에 관한 다툼은 전자 제품, 영화, 그리고 녹음 업계 사이의 '나와바리' 전쟁이었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'turf'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Someone's turf is the area which is most familiar to them or where they feel most confident(어떤 사람의 turf란 그 사람에게 가장 익숙하거나 가장 자신 있다고 느끼는 지역이다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'turf'를 "the place where somebody lives and/or works, especially when they think of it as their own(어떤 사람이 살거나 일하는 장소, 특히 자신의 근거지라고 생각하는 곳)"이라고 풀이했다.

"He feels more confident on home turf(그는 자신의 근거지에서 더 자신감 있다고 느낀다)."
