케임브릿지 사전은 'miss the boat'를 "to lose an opportunity to do something by being slow to act(늦게 행동해서 어떤 것을 할 기회를 놓치다)"라고 정의했다.

"There were tickets available last week, but he missed the boat by waiting till today to try to buy some(지난주에는 살 수 있는 표가 있었는데, 그는 오늘까지 표를 좀 사려고 기다려서 기회를 놓쳤다)."

콜린스 사전은 'miss the boat'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone has missed the boat, you mean that they have missed an opportunity and may not get another(어떤 사람이 miss the boat 했다면, 그들이 기회를 놓쳤고 다시 기회가 없을지도 모른다는 뜻이다)."

롱맨 사전은 'miss the boat'를 "to fail to take an opportunity that will give you an advantage(당신에게 이득을 줄 기회를 잡기에 실패하다)"라고 풀이했다.
