케임브릿지 사전은 'ephemeral'을 "lasting for only a short time(아주 짧은 시간 동안만 지속되는)"이라고 정의했다.

"Fame in the world of rock and pop is largely ephemeral(록 음악과 팝 음악의 세상에서 명성이란 대체로 덧없다)."

콜린스 사전은 'ephemeral'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something as ephemeral, you mean that it lasts only for a very short time(어떤 것을 ephemeral이라고 표현한다면, 그것이 아주 짧은 시간 동안만 지속된다는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"He talked about the country's ephemeral unity being shattered by the defeat(그는 그 나라가 패배해서 짧은 연합이 산산이 부서졌다는 점에 관해 이야기했다)."
