케임브릿지 사전은 'bode well'을 "to be a sign that something good will happen in the future(미래에 좋은 일이 일어날 거라는 징조이다)"라고 정의했다.

"The sales trends for the quarter do not bode well for the industry(그 사분기의 판매 동향은 업계에 좋은 징조가 아니다)."

"The morning began with a spectacular sunrise that boded well for a dry and comfortable expedition(그 아침은 비가 내리지 않고 편안한 여행의 좋은 징조가 되는, 멋진 일출로 시작했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'bode'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something bodes ill, it makes you think that something bad will happen in the future. If something bodes well, it makes you think that something good will happen(어떤 것이 bode ill 한다면, 미래에 나쁜 일이 일어날 것이라고 생각하게 만든다는 뜻이다. 어떤 것이 bode well 한다면, 좋은 일이 일어날 거라고 생각하게 만든다는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"She says the way the bill was passed bodes ill for democracy(그녀는 그 법안이 통과된 방식이 민주주의에 좋은 징조가 아니라고 말한다)."

"Grace had dried her eyes. That boded well(그레이스는 눈물이 말랐다. 그것은 좋은 징조였다)."

롱맨 사전은 'bode well/ill (for somebody/something)'을 "to be a good or bad sign for the future(미래에 대한 좋은 또는 나쁜 징조가 되다)"라고 풀이했다.

"The opinion polls do not bode well for the Democrats(그 여론 조사는 민주당에게 좋은 징조가 아니다)."
