케임브릿지 사전은 'extortion'을 "the act of getting something, especially money, by force or threats(어떤 것을, 특히 돈을, 무력이나 협박으로 얻어내는 행위)"라고 정의했다.

"He was found guilty of obtaining the money by extortion(그는 돈을 갈취한 혐의에 유죄 판결을 받았다)."

"She's trying to protect her son from extortion(그녀는 아들로부터 돈을 갈취당하지 않으려고 하고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'extortion'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Extortion is the crime of obtaining something from someone, especially money, by using force or threats(extortion은 어떤 사람에게서 무력이나 협박을 통해 어떤 것, 특히 돈을 얻어내는 범죄이다)."

"He has been charged with extortion and abusing his powers(그는 갈취와 권력 남용으로 기소되었다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'extortion'을 "the crime of making somebody give you something by threatening them(상대를 협박해서 당신에게 무언가를 주게 만드는 범죄)"이라고 풀이했다.
