케임브릿지 사전은 'go for the jugular'를 "to make a serious effort to defeat someone, usually by criticizing or harming them in a cruel way(상대를 패배시키기 위해, 대개 잔인하게 그들을 비판하거나 해함으로써, 진지하게 노력하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Cunningham went straight for the jugular, telling him that his work was a complete disaster(커닝햄은 그가 한 일은 완전 실패였고 말하며, 곧바로 급소를 노렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'go for the jugular'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone went for the jugular, you mean that they strongly attacked another person's weakest points in order to harm them(어떤 사람이 go for the jugular 했다고 말하면, 그들이 상대를 해하기 위해 가장 약한 부분을 강하게 공격했다는 뜻이다)." 비격식적인(informal) 표현이다.

"Mr Black went for the jugular, asking intimate sexual questions(블랙 씨는 은밀한 성적인 질문을 던지면서 급소를 노렸다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'go for the jugular'를 "to attack someone's weakest point during a discussion, in an aggressive way(논의 중에 공격적으로 상대의 가장 약한 부분을 공격하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"She went straight for the jugular and asked him to explain his previous criminal record(그녀는 곧바로 급소를 노리며 그에게 이전 범죄 기록을 설명해 달라고 부탁했다)."
