케임브릿지 사전은 'touch-and-go'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If a situation is touch-and-go, it is uncertain(상황이 touch-and-go 하다면, 그것은 불확실한 것이다)"

"The doctor says that it's touch-and-go whether Mary will be okay(의사 선생님 말로는 메리가 괜찮을지 어떨지는 불확실하다고 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'touuch and go'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something is touch and go, you mean that you are uncertain whether it will happen or succeed(어떤 것이 touch and go라고 말한다면, 어떤 것이 일어날지, 성공할지 확신하지 못한다는 뜻이다)."

"It was touch and go whether we'd go bankrupt(우리가 파산할지 어떨지는 불확실한 상황이었다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'touch-and-go'를 "used to say that the result of a situation is uncertain and that there is a possibility that something bad or unpleasant will happen(어떤 상황의 결과가 불확실하며, 나쁘거나 불쾌한 일이 일어날 가능성이 있다고 말하기 위해 쓰는 말)"이라고 풀이했다.
