케임브릿지 사전은 'go up in smoke'를 "to be wasted(낭비되다)"라고 정의했다.

"When the business went bankrupt, twenty years of hard work went up in smoke(그 기업이 파산하자, 20년의 노고가 물거품처럼 사라졌다)."

콜린스 사전은 'go up in smoke'를 "to come to nothing(허사가 되다)"이라고 설명했다.

"Their dreams had gone up in smoke(그들의 꿈은 수포로 돌아갔다)."

롱맨 사전은 'go up in smoke'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if a plan or some work goes up in smoke, it fails or you cannot continue with it(계획이나 어떤 일이 go up in smoke 한다면, 그것이 실패하거나 당신이 그것을 계속할 수 없는 것이다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"We haven’t worked this long just to see everything go up in smoke(우리는 모든 것이 수포로 돌아가는 걸 보려고 이렇게 오래 일한 게 아니다)."
