케임브릿지 사전은 'down-at-heel'을 "wearing old clothes, or in a bad condition, because of not having much money(돈이 많지 않아서 낡은 옷을 입거나 상태가 좋지 않은)"라고 정의했다.

"She had a decidedly down-at-heel appearance(그녀는 분명히 초라한 행색이었다)."

"He worked in a down-at-heel café(그는 초라한 카페에서 일했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'down at heel'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Something that is down-at-heel is in bad condition because it has been used too much or has not been looked after properly. If you say that someone is down-at-heel, you mean that they are wearing old, worn clothes because they have little money(down-at-heel한 사물은 너무 많이 사용되었거나 제대로 돌보지 않아 상태가 좋지 않은 것이다. 어떤 사람이 down-at-heel하다고 말한다면, 돈이 없기 때문에 오래되고 낡은 옷을 입고 있다는 뜻이다).
