케임브릿지 사전은 'in the works'를 "in the process of being planned or done(계획되거나 행해지는 과정에 있는)"이라고 정의했다.

"Changes to the system are already in the works(제도 변화는 이미 논의 중이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'in the works'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something is in the works, it has already been planned or begun(어떤 것이 in the works 하다면, 이미 계획되거나 시작된 것이다)."

"He said there were dozens of economic plans in the works(그는 수십 개의 경제 계획이 논의되고 있다고 말했다)." 

"Nobody should be surprised by this. It's been in the works for some time(그 누구도 이걸로 놀라지 않았다. 한동안 진행되고 있었기 때문이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'in the works'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "something that is in the works is being discussed, planned or prepared and will happen or exist soon(in the works 한 것은 논의되거나, 계획되거나, 준비되는 중이며 곧 일어나거나 존재할 것이다)"
