케임브릿지 사전은 'marry someonf off'를 "to make certain that someone, especially a female member of your family, gets married, or that she marries the person you have chosen(어떤 사람, 특히 가족 내 여성 구성원이, 결혼하도록 또는 그녀가 당신이 고른 사람과 결혼하게 만들다)"이라고 정의했다.

"She was married off to the local doctor by the age of 16(그녀는 16세의 나이에 동네 의사에게 시집 갔다)."

콜린스 사전은 'marry off'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you marry someone off, you find a suitable person for them to marry(어떤 사람을 marry off 한다면, 그들에게 결혼하기 적절한 사람을 찾아 주는 것이다)."

"He had tried to marry off his grandsons to three royal princesses(그는 자신의 손자들을 왕녀들에게 장가 보내려고 노력했다)."
