케임브릿지 사전은 'close to the bone'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If something you say or write is close to the bone, it is close to the truth in a way that might offend some people(당신이 하는 말이나 쓰는 글이 close to the bone 하다면, 그것이 진실에 가까워서 어떤 사람들은 이를 불쾌하게 여길 수도 있다는 뜻이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'close to the bone'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If something is too close to the bone, it makes you feel uncomfortable because it is very close to the truth or to the real nature of something(어떤 것이 너무 close to the bone 하다면, 그것이 진실에, 또는 어떤 것의 진짜 본질에 아주 가까워서 당신이 불편하게 느낄 정도라는 뜻이다)."
