케임브릿지 사전은 'posture'라는 동사를 "to behave in a way that is intended to attract attention and interest, or to try to make people believe something that is not true(타인의 관심이나 흥미를 끌기 위해 의도된 방식으로 행동하거나, 또는 사실이 아닌 어떤 것을 사람들로 하여금 믿게 만들려고 노력하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Businesses were co-operating across regional divides while the politicians postured(정치인들이 가식적으로 구는 동안, 기업들은 지역 분열에 협력하고 있었다)."

"In the end, it simply looked like you were posturing(결국엔 그냥 네가 가식적으로 행동하는 것처럼 보일 뿐이었다)."

"Posturing male politicians were favourites for the artists' cartoons(가식적으로 구는 남자 정치인들이 그 예술가의 만화의 단골 소재였다)."

콜린스 사전은 동사 'posture'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You can say that someone is posturing when you disapprove of their behaviour because you think they are trying to give a particular impression in order to deceive people(어떤 사람이 사람들을 속이기 위해 특정한 인상을 주려고 한다고 생각하기 때문에 당신이 어떤 사람의 행동을 못마땅하게 여길 때, 그들이 posturing 한다고 말한다)." 격식을 차리고(formal) 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
