케임브릿지 사전은 'scupper'를 "to cause something such as a plan or an opportunity to fail(계획 또는 기회 같은 것이 실패하게 만들다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Arriving late for the interview scuppered my chances of getting the job(면접에 늦게 도착해서 그 일자리를 얻을 내 기회를 망쳤다)."

콜린스 사전은 'scupper'를 이렇게 설명했다. "To scupper a plan or attempt means to spoil it completely(계획 또는 시도를 scupper 하는 것은 이것을 완전히 망치는 것이다)." 대체로 영국식(mainly British) 표현이다.

"If Schneider had seen him that would have scuppered all his plans(슈나이더가 그를 보았다면, 그것은 그의 계획을 모두 망쳤을 것이다)."

"If the Commission has its way, the entire deal will be scuppered(그 위원회가 자신들 뜻대로 한다면, 그 거래는 전부 망할 것이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'scupper'를 "to cause somebody/something to fail(어떤 사람/사물이 실패하게 만들다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The residents' protests scuppered his plans for developing the land(거주민들의 항의 때문에 그 땅을 개발하겠다는 그의 계획은 실패했다)."

"Their chances of winning were scuppered by injury(그들이 이길 가능성은 부상으로 인해 좌절되었다)."
