케임브릿지 사전은 'trenchant'를 "severe, expressing strong criticism or forceful opinions(가혹한, 강한 비판 또는 단호한 의견을 표현하는)"라고 정의했다.

"His most trenchant criticism is reserved for the party leader, whom he describes as "the most incompetent and ineffectual the party has known"(그의 가장 정곡을 찌르는 비판은 그 당의 지도자를 위해 예약되어 있는데, 그는 그[지도자]를 "그 당에서 가장 무능하고 능력이 부족하다"라고 표현했다)."

"Dorothy Parker's writing is characterized by a trenchant wit and sophistication(도로시 파커의 글은 정곡을 찌르는 위트와 세련됨이 특징이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'trenchant'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You can use trenchant to describe something such as a criticism or comment that is very clear, effective, and forceful(trenchant는 아주 명확하고 효과적이고 단호한 비판이나 코멘트를 표현하기 위해 쓴다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
