케임브릿지 사전은 'clear the decks'를 "to remove unnecessary things so that you are ready for action(활동할 수 있도록 불필요한 것들을 제거하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Let's clear the decks and then we can start cooking dinner(정리부터 하고 저녁 요리를 시작합시다)."

콜린스 사전은 'clear the decks'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you clear the decks, you get ready to start something new by finishing any work that has to be done or getting rid of any problems that are in the way(clear the decks 한다면, 해야 하는 일을 끝내거나 방해가 되는 문제들을 제거함으로써 새로운 일을 시작할 준비를 하는 것이다)."

"The hostage release could clear the decks for war(인질 석방은 전쟁을 대비할 수 있다)."
