케임브릿지 사전은 'tensile'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If a material is tensile, it can be stretched(어떤 물질이 tensile하다면, 그것은 늘어날 수 있는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'tensile'을 이렇게 설명했다. "You use tensile when you are talking about the amount of stress that materials such as wire, rope, and concrete can take without breaking; a technical term in engineering(와이어, 밧줄, 콘크리트 등의 물질이 끊어지지 않고 감당할 수 있는 스트레스의 양을 말할 때 tensile을 쓴다. 엔지니어링 분야의 기술 용어)."

"Certain materials can be manufactured with a high tensile strength(특정 물질은 끊어지지 않고 길게 늘어날 수 있는 힘을 가지도록 제조될 수 있다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'tensile'을 "used to describe the extent to which something can stretch without breaking(어떤 것이 끊어지지 않고 늘어날 수 있는 범위를 묘사하는 데 쓰는 말)"이라고 풀이했다.
