케임브릿지 사전은 'calumny'를 "(the act of making) a statement about someone that is not true and is intended to damage the reputation of that person(진실하지 않은, 어떤 사람의 명예를 훼손하기 위해 의도된 발언(을 하는 행위)"이라고 정의했다.

"He was subjected to the most vicious calumny, but he never complained and never sued(그는 가장 악랄한 중상의 대상이 되었지만, 그는 결코 불평하지 않았고 고소도 하지 않았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'calumny'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Calumny or a calumny is an untrue statement made about someone in order to reduce other people's respect and admiration for them(Calumny 또는 calumny는 어떤 사람에 대한 다른 이들의 존중과 존경심을 줄이려는, 진실되지 못한 발언이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.
