케임브릿지 사전은 'in the ascendant'를 "increasingly successful or powerful(성공하고 있거나 힘을 얻고 있는)"이라고 정의했다.

"He's very much in the ascendant in Hollywood(그는 할리우드에서 아주 인기를 얻고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'in the ascendant'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone or something is in the ascendant, they have or are getting more power, influence, or popularity than other people or things(어떤 사람 또는 사물이 in the ascendant라면, 다른 사람 또는 사물보다 더 많은 힘, 영향력, 또는 인기가 있거나 그것을 얻고 있는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"Radical reformers are once more in the ascendant(급진적인 개혁가들이 다시 한 번 세력을 넓히고 있다)."
