케임브릿지 사전은 'straggler'를 이렇게 정의했다. "The stragglers are the people in a group who are moving more slowly or making less progress than the others(어떤 그룹에서의 stragglers는 다른 이들보다 느리게 움직이거나 느리게 진척을 보이는 사람들이다)."

"There were two stragglers twenty yards back(20야드(=18m) 뒤에 두 명의 낙오자가 있었다)."

"Any straggler that fell behind or got lost in the darkness was easy prey for the enemy(뒤처지거나 어둠 속에서 길을 잃는 낙오자들은 적들의 쉬운 먹잇감이었다)." 

콜린스 사전은 'straggler'를 "a person or an animal that is among the last or the slowest in a group to do something, for example, to finish a race or leave a place(어떤 그룹에서 어떤 일을 하는 데, 예를 들어서, 경주를 끝내거나 어떤 장소를 떠나는 데 있어서, 마지막이거나 가장 느린 사람 또는 동물)"라고 풀이했다.

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'straggler'를 "a person or animal that is behind the others in a group, because they are moving more slowly(더욱 느리게 움직이기 때문에 한 그룹에서 다른 사람들보다 뒤처진 사람 또는 동물)"라고 풀이했다.
