케임브릿지 사전은 'tailspin'을 "a situation in which something starts to fail or lose value and gets more and more out of control(어떤 것이 떨어지거나 가치를 잃기 시작하고 더욱더 통제를 잃게 되는 상황)"이라고 정의했다.

"Share prices went into a tailspin when the CEO resigned(CE가 사임하자 주가가 폭락했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'tailspin'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If something such as an industry or an economy goes into a tailspin, it begins to perform very badly or to fail(산업이나 경제 같은 것이 tailspin에 처한다면, 아주 나쁜 성과를 내거나 실패하기 시작하는 것이다)."

"The disruption of European trade during the war had thrown the economy into a tailspin(전쟁 동안 유럽 무역의 두절은 경제를 악화시켰다)."
