[영어 공부] the worse for wear(더 이상 쓸 수 없을 정도로 낡은/술이 취한)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'the worse for wear'를 "tired or in poor condition because of a lot of work or use(많이 일해서 또는 많이 쓰였기 때문에 피곤하거나 상태가 좋지 않은)"라고 정의했다.

"After a month of journeying over rough roads, the drivers and their trucks were looking the worse for wear(한 달간 거친 길을 여행하다 보니, 운전자들과 트럭들은 상당히 낡았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'the worse for wear'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone is the worse for wear, you mean that they are tired, ill, or in a bad state because they have been very active, been through a difficult experience, or been drinking alcohol(어떤 사람이 the worse for wear라고 한다면, 그들이 아주 활동적이었거나, 어려운 경험을 했거나, 술을 마셨기 때문에, 피곤하거나,아프거나 나쁜 상태에 있는 것이다)." 격식을 차리지 않은(informal) 표현이다.

"He arrived on January 9, disheveled and much the worse for wear(그는 부스스하고 술에 취한 채로, 1월 9일에 도착했다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'the worse for wear'를 "drunk(술에 취한)"라고 풀이했다.
