케임브릿지 사전은 'engrossing'을 "very interesting and needing all your attention(아주 흥미롭고 당신의 관심을 모두 요구하는)"이라고 정의했다.

"an engrossing book/story(흡인력 있는 책/이야기)"

"I found the movie completely engrossing from beginning to end(나는 그 영화가 처음부터 끝까지 무척 흥미로웠다)."

콜린스 사전은 'engrossing'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Something that is engrossing is very interesting and holds your attention completely(engrossing한 것은 아주 흥미롭고 완전히 당신의 관심을 차지하는 것이다)." 긍정적인(approval) 뉘앙스이다.
