케임브릿지 사전은 'foreground'를 "to give the most importance to a particular subject, etc.(특정한 주제 등에 가장 큰 중요성을 부여하다)"라고 정의했다.

"His speech foregrounded the history of the decision(그의 연설은 그 결정의 역사를 특히 중요시한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'foreground'를 이렇게 설명했다. "To foreground certain features of a situation means to make them the most important part of a description or account(어떤 상황의 어떤 특징을 foreground 하는 것은, 그것을 묘사 또는 이야기의 가장 중요한 부분으로 만드는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"His book foregrounds three events in which police relations with the media were central(그의 책은 경찰과 언론의 관계가 중심적인 세 사건을 특히 중요시한다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'foreground'를 "to give particular importance to something(어떤 것에 특정한 중요성을 부여하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The play foregrounds the relationship between father and daughter(그 연극은 부녀간의 관계를 특히 중요시한다)."
