케임브릿지 사전은 명사 'gloss'를 "an explanation for a word or phrase(단어나 구에 대한 설명)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 동사 'gloss'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you gloss a difficult word or idea, you provide an explanation of it(어려운 단어나 아이디어를 gloss한다면, 그에 대한 설명을 제공하는 것이다)."
