케임브릿지 사전은 'take cognizance of something'을 "to take notice of and consider something, especially when judging(특히 판결을 내릴 때, 어떤 것을 인지하고 고려하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The lawyer asked the jury to take cognizance of the defendant's generosity in giving to charity(변호사는 배심원단에게 피고가 관대하게 자선 단체에게 기부했다는 사실을 알아 달라고 부탁했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'cognizance'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Cognizance is knowledge or understanding(cognizance는 지식 또는 이해이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"...the teacher's developing cognizance of the child's intellectual activity(...교사가 아이의 지적 활동을 점차 인식하는 것)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'take cognizance of something'을 "to understand or consider something; to take notice of something(어떤 것을 이해하거나 고려하다; 어떤 것을 인지하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
