케임브릿지 사전은 'milieu'를 "the people, physical, and social conditions and events that provide the environment in which someone acts or lives(어떤 사람이 활동하거나 사는 환경을 제공하는, 사람, 물리적, 그리고 사회적 조건과 사건)"라고 정의했다.

"It is a study of the social and cultural milieu in which Michelangelo lived and worked(그것은 미켈란젤로가 살고 일했던, 사회적이고 문화적 환경의 연구이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'milieu'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Your milieu is the group of people or activities that you live among or are familiar with(milieu란 그 안에서 사는, 또는 익숙한, 사람들 그룹이나 활동이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"They stayed, safe and happy, within their own social milieu(그들은 자신의 사회적 환경 안에서 안전하고 행복하게 머물렀다)." 

"His natural milieu is that of the arts(그의 타고난 환경은 예술적 환경이었다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'milieu'를 "​the social environment that you live or work in(당신이 살거나 일하는, 사회적 환경)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The findings of the report refer to a particular social and cultural milieu(그 보고서의 결론은 특정한 사회적, 문화적 환경을 가리킨다)."
