케임브릿지 사전은 'ascribe'를 "to believe or say that something is caused by something else(어떤 것이 다른 것에 의해 초래되었다고 믿거나 말하다)"라고 정의했다.

"To what do you ascribe your phenomenal success?(무엇 덕분에 경이로운 성공을 할 수 있었다고 생각하세요?)"

콜린스 사전은 'ascribe'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you ascribe an event or condition to a particular cause, you say or consider that it was caused by that thing(어떤 사건이나 조건을 특정한 원인으로 ascribe 한다면, 그것이 바로 그에 의해 초래되었다고 말하거나 여기는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"An autopsy eventually ascribed the baby's death to sudden infant death syndrome(부검은 결국 그 아기의 사망을 유아 돌연사 증후군으로 돌렸다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'ascribe something to somebody/something'을 "to consider that something is caused by a particular thing or person(어떤 것이 특정한 사물이나 사람에 의해 초래되었다고 여기다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"He ascribed his failure to bad luck(그는 그의 실패를 불운의 탓으로 돌렸다)."
