케임브릿지 사전은 'shorthand'를 "to be a short or quick way of referring to something(어떤 것을 가리키는, 짧거나 재빠른 방식)"이라고 정의했다.

"Wi-fi is shorthand for wireless fidelity(wi-fi는 'wireless fidelity'의 약칭이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'shorthand'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You can use shorthand to mean a quick or simple way of referring to something(어떤 것을 가리키는, 재빠르거나 단순한 방법을 의미하는 데 shorthand를 쓴다)."

"We've been friends so long we have a kind of shorthand. We don't really need to speak(우리는 아주 오랫동안 친구로 지내 와서, 일종의 약칭이 있다. 우리는 말할 필요도 없다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'shorthand'를 "a shorter way of saying or referring to something, which may not be as accurate as the more complicated way of saying it(어떤 것을 말하거나 가리키는 짧은 방식으로, 그것을 말하는 더욱 복잡한 방식만큼 정확하지는 않을 수 있다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"Smoking became visual shorthand for ‘cool and rebellious’(흡연은 '멋지고 반항적인'을 의미하는 시각적 약칭이 되었다)."
