케임브릿지 사전은 'outbuilding'을 "a usually small building near to and on the same piece of land as a larger building(대개 더 큰 건물 가까이에 있고, 같은 땅덩어리에 있는 작은 건물)"이라고 정의했다.

"The barn and other outbuildings were sold together with the main house(헛간과 다른 별채들은 본채와 같이 팔렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'outbuilding'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Outbuildings are small buildings for keeping things in or working in which are near a house, on the land belonging to it(outbuilding은 그 집에 속하는 땅에 위치하며, 그 집 근처에 있는, 물건을 보관하거나 일하기 위한 작은 건물들이다)."

"You may also need a permit to demolish part of the structure or outbuildings(구조의 일부나 별채를 철거하려면 또한 허가가 필요할 수도 있습니다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'outbuilding'을 "a building such as a shed or stable that is built near to, but separate from, a main building(본채와는 가까이 지어지지만, 별개로 구분되어 있는, 헛간이마 마굿간 같은 건물)"이라고 풀이했다.
