케임브릿지 사전은 'under the table'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If something is done under the table, it is a secret, hidden action(어떤 것이 under the table로 행해지면, 그것은 비밀스럽고, 숨겨진 행위인 것이다)"

"They offered him money under the table to change his mind(그들은 그의 마음을 바꾸기 위해, 뇌물을 제공했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'do something under the table'을 "to do something secretly because it is dishonest or illegal. The usual British expression is do something under the counter(어떤 것이 부정직하거나 불법적이기 때문에 비밀스럽게 하다. 대체로 영국식 표현은 do something under the counter이다)."
