케임브릿지 사전은 'relent'를 "to act in a less severe way towards someone and allow something that you had refused to allow before(어떤 사람에게 덜 가혹하게 행동하고, 이전에는 허용하기를 거부하던 것을 허용하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Her parents eventually relented and let her go to the party(그녀의 부모님은 마침내 그녀가 파티에 가도록 허락해 주셨다)."

"The security guard relented and let them through(그 경비원은 그들이 지나가게 허락했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'relent'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you relent, you allow someone to do something that you had previously refused to allow them to do(relent 한다면, 이전에는 어떤 사람에게 하지 못하게 거부했던 일을 허용하는 것이다)."
