케임브릿지 사전은 'slog'를 "a period of difficult or tiring effort(어렵거나 지치는 노력이 기간)"라고 정의했다.

"This semester was a long hard slog; I'm glad it's over(이번 학기는 길고 힘든 고투의 시간이었어. 끝나서 기뻐)."

"That last hill before the finishing line was a long slog!(결승선 전의 마지막 언덕이 긴 고투의 구간이었어)"

콜린스 사전은 'slog'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe a task as a slog, you mean that it is tiring and requires a lot of effort(어떤 과제를 slog라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 지치고 많은 노력을 요구하는 것이다)." 격식을 차리지 않은(informal) 표현이다.

"I eventually got financial backing, but it was a slog(나는 결국 재정적 지원을 받았지만, (그때까지가) 긴 고투의 시간이었다)." 

"There is little to show for the two years of hard slog(2년간의 긴 고투에는 별로 보여 줄 것이 없다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'slog'를 "a period of hard work or effort(어려운 일 또는 노력의 기간)"라고 풀이했다.

"Writing the book took ten months of hard slog(그 책을 쓰는 일은 10개월의 힘든 고투였다)."

"It was a long slog to the top of the mountain(산 정상까지 오르는 일은 긴 고투였다)."
