[영어 공부] purpotedly((사실이 아닐지도 모르지만) …라고 알려진[진술된])

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'purportedly'를 "in a way that is stated to be true, although this may not be the case(그렇지 않을 수도 있지만, 사실이라고 알려진 대로)"라고 정의했다.

"The study purportedly found that men married to smart women live longer(그 연구는 똑똑한 여성들과 결혼한 남성들이 더 오래 산다는 사실을 발견했다고 주장한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'purportedly'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that something has purportedly been done, you mean that you think that it has been done but you cannot be sure(어떤 것이 purportedly하게 행해졌다고 말하면, 그것이 행해졌다고 생각하지만, 확신할 수는 없다는 뜻이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"He was given a letter purportedly signed by the Prime Minister(그는 총리가 서명했다고 알려진 편지를 받았다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'purportedly'를 "used to say that something has been stated to have happened or to be true, but this might not be the case(어떤 일이 일어났거나 사실이라고 말해지지만, 정말 그렇지는 않을 수도 있는 일을 가리키는 말)"라고 풀이했다.
