케임브릿지 사전은 'invective'를 "criticism that is very forceful, unkind, and often rude(강압적이고, 불쾌하며, 대체로 무례한 비판)"라고 정의했다.

"A stream of invective from some sectors of the press continues to assail the government(언론의 일부 분야에서는 계속해서 정부를 공격하는 욕설을 내뱉고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'invective'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Invective is rude and unpleasant things that people shout at people they hate or are angry with(invective는 사람들이 자기가 싫어하거나 화난 상대에게 외치는, 무례하고 불쾌한 말들이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"A woman had hurled racist invective at the family(한 여자가 그 가족에게 인종차별적인 욕설을 퍼부었다)." 

"Crowley maintained a stream of invective and abuse against Waite(크로울리는 계속해서 웨이트에게 욕설을 퍼붓고 학대했다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'invective'를 "​rude language and unpleasant remarks that somebody shouts when they are very angry(화났을 대 외치는, 무례한 언어와 불쾌한 발언)"라고 풀이했다.

"The gesture infuriated him and he let out a stream of invective(그 손짓은 그를 화나게 했고, 그는 욕설을 퍼부었다)."

"a speech full of invective against the government(정부에 대한 욕설이 가득한 연설)"
