케임브릿지 사전은 'grating'을 이렇게 정의했다. "A grating sound is unpleasant and annoying(grating한 소리는 불쾌하고 짜증 나는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'grating'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A grating sound is harsh and unpleasant(grating한 소리는 거칠고 불쾌한 것이다)."

"She recognized the grating voice of Dr. Sarnoff(그녀는 사노프 선생의 거슬리는 목소리를 알아차렸다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'grating'을 "​(of a sound or somebody talking) unpleasant or annoying to listen to((소리가 누군가 말하는 것이) 듣기에 불쾌하거나 짜증 나는)"라고 풀이했다.
