케임브릿지 사전은 동사 'smart'를 "to hurt with a sharp pain(날카로운 통증으로 아프다)"이라고 정의했다.

"My eyes were smarting from the onions(눈이 양파 때문에 따끔하다)."

콜린스 사전은 'smart'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If a part of your body or a wound smarts, you feel a sharp stinging pain in it(신체 일부나 상처가 smart 하다면, 그곳에 날카로운, 따끔한 통증을 느끼는 것이다)."
