케임브릿지 사전은 'make (someone's) hackles rise'를 "to annoy someone(누구를 화나게 하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The president's speech has raised hackles among members of the opposing party(대통령의 연설은 상대 당의 당원들을 화나게 만들었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'raise sb's hackles/make sb's hackles rise'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something raises your hackles or makes your hackles rise, it makes you feel angry and hostile(어떤 것이 raise your hackles 또는 make your hackles rise 한다면, 그것이 당신을 화나게 하고 적대적으로 만드는 것이다)."
