케임브릿지 사전은 'atavistic'을 "happening because of a very old habit from a long time ago in human history, not because of a conscious decision or because it is necessary now(의식적 결정 때문이라거나 그것이 지금 당장 필수적이어서가 아아니라, 인간 역사에서 오래전에 생긴 아주 오래된 습관 때문에 일어나는)"라고 정의했다.

"an atavistic fear of the dark(인간 본래의, 어둠을 두려워하는 마음)"

콜린스 사전은 'atavistic'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Atavistic feelings or behaviour seem to be very primitive, like the feelings or behaviour of our earliest ancestors(atavistic한 감정 또는 행동은 우리 최초의 조상들의 감정이나 행동처럼, 아주 원시적이어 보이는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"...an atavistic fear of snakes(...인간 본래의, 뱀 공포증)."

롱맨 사전은 'atavistic'을 이렇게 풀이했다."atavistic feelings are very basic human feelings that people have felt since humans have existed(atavistic한 감정은 인간이 존재해 온 이래로 사람들이 느꼈던, 아주 원초적인 인간 감정이다)"
