케임브릿지 사전은 'inimical'을 "harmful or limiting(해롭거나 제한하는)"이라고 정의했다.

"Excessive managerial control is inimical to creative expression(과도한 경영 통제는 창의적 표현에 반한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'inimical'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Conditions that are inimical to something make it difficult for that thing to exist or do well(어떤 것에 inimical한 상태는 그것이 존재하거나 잘 해내기 어렵게 만드는 것이다)." 격식을 차린(formal) 표현이다.

"...a false morality that is inimical to human happiness(...인간 행복에 불리한, 거짓된 도덕성)." 

"...goals inimical to Western interests(...서구의 이익에 불리한 목표들)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'inimical'을 "harmful to something; not helping something(어떤 것에 해로운; 어떤 것에 도움이 되지 않는)"이라고 풀이했다.

"These policies are inimical to the interests of society(이 정책들은 사회의 이익에 반한다)."
