사랑/연애란 참 신비하고 어려운 일 같다. 사랑에 빠졌을 때 뭘 어떻게 하면 좋을지 따를 수 있는 규칙이랄 것도 없고, 각 개인에 따라 경험이 천차만별이다.

이처럼 딱 이렇다 할 규칙도 없고, 어떤 명확한 가이드라인 같은 게 없을 때 'be no hard and fast rules'라는 표현을 쓸 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'be no hard and fast rules'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If there are no hard and fast rules, there are no clear rules for you to follow(be no hard and fast rules라면, 따라야 할 명확한 규칙이 없는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'hard anf fast'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that there are no hard and fast rules, or that there is no hard and fast information about something, you are indicating that there are no fixed or definite rules or facts(hard and fast 한 규칙이 없다고, 또는 어떤 것에 대한 hard and fast 한 규칙이 없다고 말한다면, 고정되거나 명확한 규칙 또는 사실이 없다는 뜻이다)."

"There are no hard and fast rules, but rather traditional guidelines as to who pays for what(명확한 규칙은 없지만, 누가 무엇에 대해 돈을 지불하는지에 대한 전통적인 가이드라인은 있다)."

"At the moment there's no hard and fast timetable(지금 당장으로선 명확한 시간표가 없다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'hard and fast'를 "fixed and not able to be changed(고정되고 변화시킬 수 없는)"라고 풀이했다.
