[영어 공부] bring sb/sth to their knees(~을 무릎 꿇리다[굴복시키다])

 

어느 언어권이든 무릎 꿇는 건 거의 사실상 패배라고 인식되나 보다. 영어에서도 'bring sb/sth to their knees'는 '~을 무릎 꿇리다[굴복시키다]'라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'bring sb/sth to their knees'를 "to destroy or defeat someone or something(누군가 또는 어떤 것을 파괴시키거나 패배시키다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The strikes had brought the economy to its knees(그 파업은 경제를 무릎 꿇렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'bring to its knees'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If a country or organization is brought to its knees, it is almost completely destroyed by someone or something(한 국가나 기관이 brought to its knees 했다면, 누군가 또는 무엇에 거의 전멸한 것이다)."

"The country was being brought to its knees by the loss of 2.4 million manufacturing jobs(그 나라는 240만 제조업 일자리가 없어져서 파멸했다)."

"Our aim is to bring this government to its knees, to force it to the negotiating table(우리의 목표는 이 정부를 굴복시키고, 협상 자리에 끌어내는 것이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'bring someone/something to their knees'를 "to almost defeat someone, or to make them extremely weak(누군가를 거의 패배시키거나, 아주 약하게 만들다)"라고 풀이했다.

"The strike brought the government to its knees(그 파업 때문에 정부는 무릎 꿇었다)."
