'whimsy'는 '엉뚱한[기발한] 생각[행동/방식]'이라는 뜻이고 이걸 형용사로 만들면 'whimsical'이다. '엉뚱한, 기발한'이라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'whimsical'을 "unusual and strange in a way that might be funny or annoying(특이하고 재밌거나 짜증 나는 방식으로 낯선)"이라고 정의했다.
