[영어 공부] go against the grain(기질에 맞지 않다, 자기 기호에 거스르다, 자기 성격을 거스르다)

 

'grain'은 나무나 천, 암석 등의 '결'을 말하는데, 뭐든 타고난 '결'의 반대로 가는 것은 좋지 않다.

'go against the grain'은 '기질에 맞지 않다, 자기 기호에 거스르다, 자기 성격을 거스르다'라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'go against the grain'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If something goes against the grain, you would not usually do it because it would be unusual(어떤 것이 go against the grain 한다면, 그것이 특이하기 때문에 대체로 하지 않는 것이다)"

"These days it goes against the grain to show too much respect for authority(요즈음에는 권위에 큰 존경심을 표하는 것은 내 기질에 맞지 않는다)."

콜린스 사전은 'go against the grain'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that an idea or action goes against the grain, you mean that it is very difficult for you to accept it or do it, because it conflicts with your previous ideas, beliefs, or principles(어떤 아이디어나 행동이 go against the grain 한다고 말하면, 그것이 이전의 아이디어, 믿음, 또는 원칙과 충동하기 때문에 받아들이거나 행하기에 아주 어렵다는 뜻이다)."
