'bristle'은 명사로 쓰면 뻣뻣하고 짧은 털(예컨대 구두솔처럼)을 가리키고, 동사로 쓰면 화가 나서 '발끈하다'라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'bristle'을 "to react angrily(화를 내며 반응하다)"라고 정의했다.

"She bristled at the suggestion that she had in any way neglected the child(그녀는 어떤 방식으로든 아이를 방치했을지도 모른다는 암시를 한 데 발끈했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'bristle'을 이렇게 설명했다, "If you bristle at something, you react to it angrily, and show this in your expression or the way you move(어떤 것에 bristle 한다면, 그것에 화가 나서 반응하며 그 사실을 (언어적) 표현이나 몸의 움직임으로 보여 주는 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'bristle'을 "to be angry or offended about something(어떤 것에 화가 나거나 불쾌해하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
